For Freshwater Fish It Depends, There Are 2 Types Of Freshwater Fish. Freshwater & Tropical Freshwater Fish. Freshwater Are Fish Like: Koi, Goldfish, Hi-Fin Sharks, Fancy Goldfish. These Fish Can Live Without A Heater And Can Stand Very Cold Water Temperatures.
Tropical Fish On The Other Hand, Do Require A Heater. These Fish Are Fish Like: Tetras, Gouramis, Oscar Fish, African Cichlids Etc. These Fish Can Get Sick In Cold Temperatures, And Can Develop Ick, And Fin Rot.

Answer - The Most Common Used Chemical When Doing A Water Change, Is "WATER CONDITIONER Or Often Called CHLORINE REMOVER. This Is What Removes The Chlorine From Water Faucets, Or Water Directly From The Water Hose.
